Physical activity is an important part of a healthy life, and being active should also be an enjoyable part of your life. Here are some tips for building physical activity into your life.

  • If you have any medical conditions, talk to your doctor before you start an exercise program.
  • Try different activities until you find some you like, and share them with friends. That way, physical activity becomes part of your social life.
  • Protect yourself from injury. Wear the right shoes for your activity. Stretch before activity to prevent joint injury. Warm up before engaging in high-intensity exercise.
  • Avoid dehydration. Make sure you are hydrated before exercise, and stop for water if you are exercising for a long time.
  • Include activities that improve the following:
    • Muscle strength and endurance, such as resistance training
    • Flexibility and range of motion, such as yoga or tai chi
    • Cardiovascular fitness, such as walking, swimming, dancing, or cycling.
